Newhaven Town Council

Social Centres

The Town Council looks after four social centres in the town.

Meeching Hall is a former Masonic hall and is an interesting, old building, situated near the town centre in Fort Road. The main hall on the ground floor is licensed to take up to 110 people and is equipped with sturdy rectangular folding tables and stacking chairs to seat this number.  It includes a stage with a dressing room behind, and a piano.  There is a separate kitchen downstairs, equipped with a cooker, sink, work tops etc.

Upstairs are two smaller rooms, one of which has a sink and worktop.  These can take up to 30 people. There is ramped access for wheelchairs to the ground floor via a side door, and one of the toilets in the “ladies” has been adapted for use by the disabled.

The main hall and upstairs rooms are let separately.

The Denton and Mount Pleasant Social Centre is a modern, purpose built community centre, situated within the recreation ground in Denton Road. During term time the Social Centre is home to a dance school, who use the centre every weekday afternoon and early evening.

The Social Centre is licensed to take up to 100 people and is equipped with small square tables and chairs to seat this number.

There is a separate kitchen with a cooker and sink.

The Lewes Road hut is an older style wooden building situated in the Lewes Road Recreation Ground.  It is particularly suitable for children and young people’s activities and is home to a youth club which usually operates on Monday and Wednesday evenings.  It is licensed for up to 60 people and is equipped with small square tables and chairs to seat this number.

There is a separate kitchen with a cooker and sink.

The Eastside Social Centre is an older style hall, situated in Norton Terrace and originally built by and for the residents of Eastside.

The Railway Nursery at present occupies the centre every working day throughout the year up until 6pm.  Because of this, the centre is not normally available to casual users, however, private evening and weekend bookings will be accepted from residents of Eastside only. The hall is licensed to take up to 75 people and is equipped with small square tables and chairs to seat this number.  It includes a stage and a piano.

Please note that at all Town Council social centres if you intend to make tea or use the kitchen facilities you will need to bring your own kettle, saucepans, crockery and cutlery, etc.
