Battle’s Over Beacon Lighting Event

Hundreds of people attended a beacon lighting event at Newhaven Fort on Sunday 11th November.

As part of the national commemorations of the 100th anniversary of the ending of the First World War, thousands of beacons were lit across the country at 7.00pm, including at Newhaven Fort.

Singers from Meeching Amateur Dramatics sang WW1 songs until the Last Post at 6.55pm. Newhaven’s Young Mayor lit the beacon at 7.00pm and at 7.05pm Newhaven’s new Town Crier performed the National Cry for Peace Around the World.

A row of 184 candles signified the number of Newhaven people who lost their lives in the First World War.
